A piece done for my graphic design class. We had to depict a problem with today society and how they affect the planet. I chose the problem of Overpopulation. With humans living longer and more people being born, we're faced with the threat of using up all the natural resources. In the end, nature will survive, but human kind will die. Our strength in numbers may just be the death of us.
this greatly portrays as you’ve mentioned, overpopulation and in my opinion, greed. although there are others who’ve also done a piece about this concern but there’s just something about your work that strikes as both stunning and easy to remember or should i say sticks to the mind. why? because of your color choice. you may know this already but a monochromatic picture stays imprinted in a person’s mind more than a colored picture does.
technicality wise, as mentioned, there are a few out of proportion hands. not entirely sure if it was on purpose or not but regardless of that, it didn’t matter as much to me because that still depended on your style.
you may question why i mentioned greed. in my country we have this term that goes utak-talangka or crab mentality. it’s a person’s instinct to crawl up by means of stepping on others. in relation, due to the known fact that resources are scarcely enough due to overpopulation, people are now working their way up the ladder doing their best to steal what they can to save themselves. harsh, i know but that’s reality.
you’ve managed to capture and envision the grim truth of our present and hopefully not our future world.
Although I have seen many artworks with a similar theme, I have yet to see any quite like this. This portrayal of overpopulation is effective in its message; the hands appear ominous and creepy, giving the viewer a feeling that the lone plant has no chance of survival. Although some of the hand and arm anatomy appears slightly off, I believe this adds to the effect so I will refrain from ripping into it.
Although there isn't much to dislike about this image, I feel that the background could be reworked a little bit. In places, the black parts of the sky seem sawn off by the white outlines around the arms, and in parts this outline looks uneven. By evening out some of these outlines, the background will look less rough.
I hope this was helpful, and I hope to see more from you in the future!
